Rallus drove steadily toward the Fawnskin Home for the Aged.

Adrian sat in the backseat making great fanfare about drinking a milkshake.

“Damn,” he said, “that’s good.”

Rallus looked over at Penny, who sat like a stone beside him. A 85

little while ago, he had called Fisk to ask him if Michael was safe.

“He was safely reunited with his parents early today. You were right to suggest that we hide him until his parents arrived. Where you at?”

“I’m heading to the old folks home. I got Penny with me.”

“Good. We’ll meet you in an hour down by the river.”

“Tread carefully. Sandy has…well…powers.”

“I don’t believe in that stuff,” he’d said.

“Well, it would be better if you did,” Rallus had replied, glancing over at Harold who was now in the body of a dead man.

“Any word on Knox?”

“No.”

“We’re still looking.”

They wouldn’t find him. Harold had told him that after Rallus did what he wanted here at the home, they’d have to go to LA.

“You can do that?” Rallus asked.

“I have a body.”

Rallus pulled the car into the visitor’s lot. “You watch her,”

Rallus said.

“Don’t worry. She’s not going anywhere,” came the reply.

Get in there, take the files from the bottom drawer, files marked donations.

Take the files….easier said than done. There was a buzzer on the outside of the door. Everything was locked up tighter than a drum. Several elderly people sat on the second floor in wheelchairs peered at him through the glass.

He pressed the buzzer.

“Yes?”

“Hello. I am here on behalf of my…ah…client. I’d like to speak to someone…get some information.”

“No appointments today.”

“My client is very wealthy but he now needs a lot of care. I fear he can no longer live with only servants in his ten bedroom mansion.”

He waited.

The buzzer sounded and the door opened. A long corridor led him to an office where a woman around forty greeted him, dressed in a blue tailored suit and high heels. “Hello, my name is Helen Berger. I am the director. Welcome.”

“Rallus, Rallus Montana.”

“Mr. Montana,” she gave him an appreciative look. “A pleasure.”

He took her hand, held it a little too long. “The pleasure is all mine. Haven’t we met before?”

“No. I would have remembered.” She met his gaze.

Holy shit. Putty in his hands. “Can we go somewhere we can talk privately? Your office?”

“Yes. Come,” she invited.

He followed her, waited for her to close the doors. The file cabinet was right where Harold said it was.

He took the seat she offered then removed his leather jacket and folded it in his lap.

“Coffee?”

He noticed the way her gaze assessed his shoulders and his arms before meeting his eyes.

“That would be very nice.”

“I’ll buzz the secretary.” She didn’t take a seat behind the desk, instead she perched on it, in front of him, her legs parted a little.

He knew body language. He’d had to study it as part of interrogations. Reading this one was like reading an open book.

“You have very nice legs,” he commented, smiling at her flirtatiously.
